If you have been to the movies in the last 24 months you have to wonder where all the good movies have gone. If Americans are going to pay amusement park prices for a movie, some popcorn, and some chocolate, the minimum expectation is to be moderately entertained.
However, more often than not, people leave the theater and run back to their Favorite film made in 2004 to wash the stink off.
But now and then comes along something special. Every now and then some director dare dreams to be different. For 2025 Micky 17 is that movie.
Mickey 17 is a 2025 science fiction black comedy film written, produced, and directed by Bong Joon Ho, based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The film stars Robert Pattinson in the title role, alongside Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Set in the future, the plot follows a man who joins a space colony as an “Expendable”, a disposable worker who gets cloned every time he dies for research purposes.
The film has so many things in it, it is quite hard to describe. It is a blend of about fifteen different things all blended into one. The movie is fantastic because it is very entertaining. The best part is, nothing like it has ever been made.

Pattinson is wonderful like Micky, a bored follower whose life seems like a waste until he unknowingly applies for what seems like an insane job.
His role as an expendable is to test environments, go where no human should go, and find new ways to die. This concept is interesting because the plot of the film is so original that you lose yourself in the magic of the storytelling.
The cast is amazing. Mark Ruffalo, the Hulk, is totally different than you have ever seen him. He is the person in charge of the voyage to create a new space colony.
The images, the back story of love, science fiction, drama, comedy, and romance all rolled into one will have you on the edge of your seat as you try to keep up with the characters. The scenes in the movie are detailed with a POV of Mickey describing how his world becomes purposeful as he learns how to die each time.
When he finally gets to clone number 17, he is, somehow, believed to be dead and an 18th version is created. But after creatures from the new planet save him, instead of eating him, he comes home to find that there are now two versions of himself, which is forbidden.
Once they both acknowledge each other, the real fun begins. The Mickey’s have a choice to make. One can either die and allow the other to remain living, or they can co-exist. The second act of the film gets really interesting as the film takes the audience on a crazy ride as the Mickey’s vacillate on their options.
The more people that discover there are two of them, the more fun it gets. The plot twists and turns are fun to see. The film is fun to see. The fact that you have never seen anything like this makes it so good that you will walk out of the theater feeling confirmed that it’s not you.
It is not you that is too opinionated. It is not you who craves better entertainment. It is them! They need to make movies like this. They need to go back to being creative and stop stealing moviegoers’ money with horrible content.
If you are looking forward to being entertained, then see this film. You might like it, you might know, but at least you will appreciate that they put some effort into giving you an experience you have not seen before.
