There is no doubt that the average American is exhausted. They are exhausted with the crap that comes with life in the modern day. But every now and then comes something that reminds people what is important to life. The movie Song Sung Blue is that reminder.
Based on a true story, two down-on-their-luck musicians (Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson) form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band, proving it’s never too late to find love and follow your dreams.
This is not your typical tribute to a great musician. It’s so much more than that. The movie captures a time in life where people are still focused on each other, and they are still focused on finding a way out of their struggles.
The movie takes us back to the 1980s, where two struggling musicians meet and bond over music. That bond creates a love story that takes them on a journey together where they combine two broken families, two broken souls, and two broken dreams.
Hugh Jackman (Thunder) and Kate Hudson (Lightning) do an amazing job bringing the audience in as they work to take their musical lives to the next level. They appear to be stronger together than they were apart. The movie celebrates their success as they marry and begin to gain success as Lightning and Thunder, a musical tribute band to Neil Diamond.

Their success comes to a screaming halt as Kate Hudson’s character is struck by a car and loses her leg in the accident. Her below-the-knee amputation not only stuns the family, but it also stuns the audience of the movie as everyone fell in love with their story.
The movie follows along as we see Lightning struggle with life after amputation. She falls into a deep depression that almost emotionally bankrupts the family. The emotional journey that the movie takes the audience on is so good that you cannot help but empathize with her situation.
But the 80s were a time when people could not and did not give up. The time period in the movie reminded them of a time when life was simple and complicated at the same time. There were no cell phones, and there was no social media. Your problems were your problems, and there was no escaping life.
Song Sung Blue did such an amazing job taking the audience on the journey of life. Watching it living in 2025 makes the moviegoer realize just how precious failure is. It also makes you realize just how much more trying needs to be.
It’s interesting that the movie is released on Christmas Day. It underscores what life is supposed to be about. Second chances to find love, second chances to find success, and second chances to be nice to each other.
This is the movie that everyone needs to see. If only to be reminded why we are all living. We are living to feel, to fail, to get back up, and to love. Give yourself the perfect gift this holiday season and go see this movie.
Song Sung Blue is better than any gift that you will find under the tree. It gets a 9 out of 10 from CODE M.
