AUTHENTICITY IN MOTION

Dr. Wendy Ellis Jones didn’t grow up expecting to become what she now calls “The NIL Doctor.” She grew up on the south side of Chicago with a singular escape route: running. As a skinny kid with big dreams, she found that speed could transport her beyond what anyone thought was possible.

Winning four 400-meter conference championships and earning nine All-American honors, she secured her place in the Athletics Hall of Fame.

But here’s what the records don’t show: Wendy learned early that championships don’t come with a roadmap for what comes next.

FROM ATHLETE TO EXECUTIVE TO ADVOCATE

When her competing days ended, Wendy didn’t slow down. She redirected. She coached at the collegiate level, helped launch the Chicago Sky WNBA franchise, where she ranked second in sales league-wide, and went on to earn her master’s degree and a doctorate in ethical leadership. Her executive career took her to Northwestern University, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, and Honey Shine, formerly under the Alonzo Mourning Family Foundation, where she raised millions in philanthropic funding.

By every traditional measure, she had won the game. Yet something was missing. She had spent years building someone else’s brand, watching others benefit from her talent, her relationships, and her relentless work ethic. After navigating corporate layoffs and downsizing, Wendy made a decision: she bet on herself. She took 25 years of executive experience building other people’s companies and turned it into something entirely her own. That’s when “The NIL Doctor” was born.

BUILDING A BRAND AROUND A BILLION-DOLLAR OPPORTUNITY

NIL is a multi-billion-dollar industry, and Wendy recognized the opportunity: build a brand that parents, coaches, and organizations would trust the way they trust a doctor. The NIL Doctor Agency was built out of necessity to represent disenfranchised athletes being taken advantage of by unethical agents. As a certified NIL Agent herself, Dr. Ellis Jones knows firsthand what ethical representation looks like. The agency has since grown into a full-service practice built on representation, brand development, and transformational coaching, where every athlete receives a personalized prescription for success on and off the field.

“Most young athletes are playing the short game,” she explains. “They’re chasing the next deal, the next highlight, the next follower count. But with less than 2 percent of college athletes making it to the professional level, what happens when the injury comes? When does the career ends? Every athlete needs a Plan B.”

Wendy works with athletes and their families, asking the questions most are afraid to face: When your playing days are over, how do you want people to remember you? Parents trust her to help their children see beyond the game and begin building with the end in mind.

LEGACY IS BUILT EVERY SINGLE DAY

Legacy, as Wendy defines it, is built every single day you’re still playing. Michael Jordan’s legacy wasn’t built in retirement. It was forged on the court, through wins, losses, and every choice he made in between. The same is true for every student athlete. Their legacy is being shaped right now, through the values they align with, the authentic brand they develop, and the choices they make while the world is watching.

Student athletes who wait until retirement to think about their legacy are already behind. The time to build is now, while they have a platform and an opportunity to define who they are beyond the game.

A TRUTH TELLER FOR THE GENERATION THAT NEEDS IT MOST

What sets Dr. Ellis Jones apart is her commitment to honesty, delivered with care. She doesn’t mince words, but she delivers truth with the empathy of someone who has lived it. As a former collegiate athlete, she relates to what student athletes experience in ways few advisors can. She is especially passionate about serving Black and Brown student athletes and their families.

According to the Center for American Progress, 47 percent of Black mothers in America are raising children without a partner, navigating systems not always designed in their favor. These families deserve an advocate who understands both worlds and builds trust regardless of economic status or background.

Wendy brings a rare combination of Hall of Fame athletic credentials and hard-won business experience that few in this space can match. She’s been a coach, an executive, and a mentor. A woman who knows that true success is rooted in being authentic, hungry, and humble.

BETTING ON HERSELF

Today, Dr. Ellis Jones is a sought-after speaker and advisor for athletic departments, schools, organizations, and families ready to think differently about what student-athlete development truly means and what it can unlock for the next generation. She has come to understand that the greatest achievement isn’t climbing the ladder, it’s building a life of purpose and meaning.

Wendy’s ready to help athletes, families, and organizations understand that the greatest legacy isn’t built on what happens on the court. It’s built on who athletes become when the game is over, and the foundation they lay right now.
