SHOULD YOU SWIPE LEFT ON LOVE?

Dating in today’s world is like ordering takeout when you have no idea what you’re craving. You scroll through an endless menu of options, half-convinced you’re about to make a terrible decision, but the hunger (or loneliness) pushes you forward. In this digital era, romance has been reduced to thumbs, emojis, and algorithms. Finding your soulmate feels less like fate and more like matching with someone whose bio says, “Fluent in sarcasm. Let’s argue about pizza toppings.”

Remember when people used to meet in real life? The good old days of locking eyes in a coffee shop, asking someone out at a bar, or bumping into the love of your life in the cereal aisle? Well, those days have been aggressively swiped left. Today, your next date is more likely to slide into your DMs with a “Sup?” than approach you with a thoughtful compliment in person. And let’s be real — we’ve all seen the infamous opening line: “Hey …” An ellipsis never felt so underwhelming.

Dating apps are the modern gladiator arena for romance. Armed with a well-angled selfie, an obscure quote from a show no one’s watched, and a photo of you holding a puppy you borrowed from a cousin, you enter the battlefield. Will you be judged on your height? Probably. Will someone ask you for your enneagram number or zodiac sign before they decide you’re date-worthy? Absolutely. Nothing screams romance like, “Sorry, I can’t date a Sagittarius.”

Let’s not forget the bios. You’ll encounter all kinds of literary masterpieces: “I’m just here for the memes,” “6’3 because apparently that matters,” and the classic “Looking for something real. Like a taco.” Then there are the photos: blurry group shots where you can’t tell who’s who, awkward gym selfies, and the random shirtless pic featuring a mysterious bathroom sink. Sherlock Holmes couldn’t solve this puzzle.

But the real adventure begins once you match. Cue the small talk Olympics! “What do you do?” “Where are you from?” “What’s your favorite Netflix show?” It’s like a broken record on shuffle. And heaven forbid you finally meet in person — now you’re sitting across from someone who looks almost like their photos, debating whether you’re brave enough to split an appetizer without it getting weird.

Of course, we can’t talk about modern dating without mentioning ghosting. Ghosting is today’s most popular exit strategy, right after “I’m just not ready for a relationship … but let’s keep things casual.” One minute you’re planning weekend brunch; the next, they’ve vanished into the digital abyss. Maybe they’ve been abducted by aliens. Maybe their Wi-Fi cut out forever. Or maybe they just found someone with a better Spotify playlist.

But for all its quirks and frustrations, dating in today’s world does have its perks. You can filter for your preferences. You can laugh at the absurdity of it all. And sometimes, if the stars (and algorithms) align just right, you might stumble upon someone who makes you laugh, listens to your rants, and, most importantly, respects your stance on pineapple pizza.

So here’s to dating in the modern age: the memes, the misfires, and the occasional magic. Because at the end of the day, love may be hard to find, but it’s still worth swiping for — even if it takes a few hundred lefts to finally find your right. ●
